Life as a Graphic Designer – Part 1

Hello and welcome to my site!

My name is Christine and I am a graphic designer that can usually be found in front of my computer designing. I freelance and work in an in-house marketing department. Whenever I have anyone ask me about what I do for a living, I’m always a little shocked that some people, even in this day and age still don’t know what a graphic designer is.

Have you ever wondered what a graphic designer is or what they do? Maybe you are thinking about becoming one. Below I will answer some of the frequently asked questions I get when talking to people about my work.

What is a graphic designer?

As a graphic designer your job is to find an innovative solution for someone’s problems and needs – you are basically a creative problem solver. Graphic designers are visual communicator. They use their creativity, passion and influence to assemble together images, typography, and/or motion graphics to create a piece of design.

Forms, manuals, posters, movie posters, restaurant menu, packaging brochures and page layouts are just some of what can be created by a graphic designer.

So, now that you know a generic way to describe a graphic designer. You can read more on the types of graphic designers and what they do HERE.

What made you want to become a graphic designer?

I love movies and cooking. At first I contemplated becoming a culinary chef. This however, didn’t stick with me for a very long. I still love to cook and I’m always looking for new recipes but it just wasn’t something I want to make a career out of.

For me, the thing that made me want to become a graphic designer was a test I took in high school. In high school, they did this personality test and based off of the answers you gave they gave you back a list of three potential job types that would suit your personality. They then sent you to this convention center were I met a graphic designers that worked for Yamaha.

I got to talk to her about her career and what she liked about her job. I remember asking her “what exactly is it that a graphic designer does.” I don’t remember her exact answer but I do remember that after that day – I found the idea of becoming a designer interesting. I loved art and it just seemed like something I could do that I wouldn’t hate my job every day I got up.

Would you recommend being a graphic designer?

This is an extremely hard question. No one can tell you what you should do. This is a decision that should be completely up.

You may want to become a graphic design if:

  1. You are creative.
  2. Art is your passion.
  3. You have an eye for design.
  4. You like to solve problems.
  5. You ask lots of questions.

  7. You find beauty in the ordinary.
  8. You seek inspiration.
  9. You are a people-watcher.
  10. You are your own worst critic.
